This week there will be no spellings to learn as the children will not be in on Friday. Please keep revising the spellings and patterns we have covered so far: long e, long i, long o and long a sounds.
The literacy homework is a comprehension activity on Bonfire Night. I will talk to the children about the history of Bonfire Night in class on Monday. Continue this discussion with your child first to see what they can remember. Then read the passage and answer the questions on the lines below. Put the number in the margin and answer in a full sentence using the words from the question to formulate the answer. Miss a line between each answer and remember neat handwriting and capital letters and full stops.

This week I would like the children to keep a food diary, linking on from our science work last week. I have explained to the children what they need to do so I hope they will be able to show you. If not, I would like them to complete the diary each day and remember to state what they had for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I wonder who can then use adjectives to describe their food and connectives to join their sentences together? Remember neat handwriting, capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. If you need more space to write then please feel free to go on to the next page. You could also talk about which food group each item of food belongs to and to check you are having a healthy, balanced diet each day. Have fun!

Deadline: 14th June, 2013
As the children are undertaking activities that prepare them for Year Three, we thought it would be nice for the children to complete a poster about themselves. There is no right or wrong way of doing this so let the children 'go for it.' These posters will be used by the teachers next year for an initial display which will help make the children settle in and give them ownership of their new environment.
Week beginning: 13th May, 2013
We were very impressed with the riddles you wrote for your homework, well done!
Over the next 2 weeks we will be doing lots of assessments so to avoid overloading the children there will no extra homework set. Keep reading and take time to revise your spellings and look through the work we have covered this year on the weebly.

Homework: 6th May, 2013
Last week we were looking at and writing our own riddles. We played a fun game where we were allowed to give our friends 5 guesses to figure out what our animal was. We then decided that good riddles don't give the reader clues that tell them the answer straight away. We came up with the following W.I.L.F (What I'm Looking For):
1. At least 5 Sentences that give clues
2. Sentences that use at least one connective to describe the noun
3. Connectives which explain or describe why certain features are so important.
4. Openers to make sentences more varied and interesting.
5. Punctuation that emphasises certain points and helps the writing flow.
6. Start a new line for each clue.
Here is an example. You can use this to write one of your own independently, you should not need any help from adults other than spelling and to remind you of the success criteria. Printing ones from the internet will not be accepted.
Example:
What am I?
I have four powerful legs.
For the first 2 weeks of my life I am blind.
I am a feline which means that I am a member of the cat family.
My eyes are as orange as the sun.
During the night I use my radar like ears to find food and stalk through the long grass silently on my padded paws.
I have versatile claws which can grip prey and also help me change direction when I am running at top speed.
My mane intimidates and scares rival males so that they will not try to take over my huge pride.

Significant Space Explorers
Your task this week is to research a significant space explorer and make a poster to present to the class on Friday. I will provide A3 border paper. How you research and present your work is up to you so use your literacy skills. You can draw or print pictures, write captions or 'Did you know?' facts. You could use side headings and bright titles... your choice. Many of you have told me lots of interesting information so here's your chance to show off!
We will be focusing on Neil Armstrong in class so you may want to choose someone else but it is ok if you want to do him.
You can hand your poster in anytime but Friday is the deadline as usual. We will vote for the 2 best to receive certificates and they will all be displayed in the class.

With Book Week next week I thought that the children would enjoy turning their attention to the characters that they are going to be coming into school as. To go with the picture the students should write a brief description about their characters- no more than 8 sentences.

Who is this monster with glowing red eyes? He has an awfully bad temper and always lies!
Write at least 6 sentences for this homework.

Become the Expert
As part of the theme 'Explorers' the children in the class have been split into four different teams. In these teams, the children have been asked to research and 'become the expert' on one of the four main explorers being covered by 2B. The explorers are: Shackleton, Columbus, Cook and Zhang He. This is task's deadline has been extended so that the children can spend more time researching and finding out about their specific explorer. As a result of this, our experts will present their findings to the class. Posters will then be created for display so please make sure that this work is done to a high standard. Towards the end of the term, we will invite the parents in to share the morning with us where you will find out about the explorers from the students in the class.

This term we will be learning about explorers. As part of the topic we will be looking at and discussing a variety of style of maps. One of the focuses will be on the aerial view. An example of this style can be seen in the picture on the left hand side of this page.
For homework, draw an aerial view of one of the following: house, blocks of apartments, streets or bedrooms. This work is due on Friday. Click on the link below for some examples.
Please remember that it is Explorer day on Wednesday 9th January. We would like the children to come into school dressed as explorers. They will be completing some fun activities as part of our Entry Point for the topic.
