Shape
We investigated shapes to find the answers to mathematical questions such as....What is the name of this shape? How many corners does it have? How many sides?
Once we had reminded ourselves of the names, Mrs Lowes started a pattern for us to continue.
Sophie had the challenge of 'square, circle, triangle'......did she get it right?

Challenge : Name the hidden shape!
The children had to ask mathematical questions such as 'how many corners does the shape have?' 'how many sides?' to discover if the shape was a square, triangle, rectangle or circle!

This week we have been working on addition and methods of finding the answers. Although some of the sums were easy, we were concentrating on trying out the new methods!
Counting on to help us add!
12 + 3 =
We put the BIGGEST number in our head and counted on using dots.
So 12 is our starting point, we drew 3 dots and then counted on to find the answer.
12 - 13,14,15!
Easy as pie!

Basic Addition
We practised counting lots of objects and found it was easier if we counted 2 at a time. This is the same as adding 2 more each time.
Please practise counting in 2s with your child, don't forget to count back in 2s as well!

The children were challenged to find sums that made 4. Was there an easy way to do it?
Trick : Start with the answer, so 4 + 0, then 3 + 1, then 2 + 2 etc.
If the children write them in a logical order, a pattern will emerge! Try it with your child, it works with any answer!

Doubling Numbers
Mason came up with a fabulous way of remembering how to double a number.......
"You have to have the same again!"
"You have to have the same again!"
We tried out Mason's theory to see if it worked, it did!
We had "3 little girls in blue dresses" and had the same again, 3+3=6, it worked with dots too! Some children found that it even worked when you doubled large numbers as well!

Special Visitors!
Mrs Woodward had heard about a very tricky game we play called "Elevens" and wanted to try and win!
The first person starts counting at 1, they are allowed to say 1,2 or 3 numbers (1,2...), the next person would then continue (...3,4,5...) and so on until someone says '11' and have been knocked out of the game!
Amanda was very brave as she had to knock out the Deputy Master of Dulwich College, Mr. Botting! He was a very good sport and didn't cry or sulk because he knew he could join in the next game!
