This week in Maths we have been exploring symmetry, looking at how shapes are reflected in lines of symmetry. We extended this to reflect shapes and images through 2 lines of symmetry and used this process to create our own colourful symmetrical patterns. We also looked a selection of images and through using a mirror identified where lines of symmetry would fall across shapes to make perfect reflections on either side.
In our first week back of term 2 we took some simple incomplete addition number sentences and attempted to explain their meaning by inverting the calculation, creating 2 addition facts and 2 subtraction facts from the first number sentence. e.g. 12 + ? = 27 can be rearranged to form: ? + 12 = 27 and 27 - ? = 12, 27 - 12 = ?.
We then looked at which of these facts could be used easily to help us solve and complete the number sentence. We also looked at finding the difference between 2 numbers and worked hard to explain the methods we were using to solve number sentences. Alongside our Big Maths challenge, the class also managed to finish 2 loop card games reciting the 2x and 10x table facts both in under 60 seconds! Next week we will see how much quicker we can complete them. A good start back to the term, well done Maths group. |
