 A challenge!

Some of the children made shapes that we could not name so when we saw Mr Friend down at DUCKS we asked him. He was very interested in the shapes we had made and took them back to the Y13 Maths pupils in the Senior school for them to investigate. We worked out how old those pupils were by finding out the connection between year group and age then looking for a pattern. We found that:

Year group number +4 = age of children

so Y2 + 4 = children are 6 years old
     Y13 + 4 = pupils are 17 years old.

Mr Friend is coming back after the holiday with some Y13 to share their decision about the

This week we are learning abut names and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We can group them according to these properties and guess which shape someone is thinking of by asking them questions or listening to their description.

We found out that 'tri' meant 3 and 'quad' meant 4 so we could understand the names of some shapes e.g. triangle and quadrilateral.

We had a great discussion about 'what is a prism?' and tried visualizing shapes to describe them. We made 3d shapes using polydron, some children set themselves some fantastic challenges like making a hexagonal prism. Can you remember what a tetrahedron is??

We are learning about money and English coins. We worked out what we could swop each coin for e.g 50p = 10 x 5p, 5 x 10p coins etc. We counted how much is in our money boxes andy which coins we needed to pay for things that cost up to £5.

Remember there are 100 pennies in a pound (£1)

Have a go at some of these money games at home (Click on the coin picture.)

Please note this week's homework is revising our learning from last week- please hand in on Friday.

Here are some examples of the number problems we have been solving.

We looked at different ways of solving these problems using number lines, 100 squares and our number fact knowledge.

You can also solve this by counting up or back in ones on 100 square.

You can also count down on a 100 square e.g. 54, 44, 34, 24, 14, 4=  5 jumps of 10 so 5 pencils with 4p left over.

We have also been practicing halving in number problems

Doubling and Halving

We found this a bit tricky today so we used cubes to help us. Some children knew lots of number facts which helped them work it out more quickly. Here is our method-

Double 15
10+10 = 20         5+5=10   so 20+10= 30

Halve 26
half of 20/ 20 divided by 2/ cut 20 in half equally = 10             half of 6= 3      so 10+3=13

Practise these at home.

We have spent the first couple of weeks counting forwards and backwards in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s and ordering numbers. We used 100 squares and number lines to help us.

We learned about place value- how much each number is worth when it is written e.g 24 is 2 tens and 4 units.

Last week we tried out Numeracy groups and will find out on Monday which teacher we will have.
