This week we have really been working on telling the time. We are focusing on using words such as; 1.30 rather than half past 1;  1:15 rather than quarter past 1; and 1:45 rather than quarter to 2. This is to help consolidate our learning about the minutes and hours. So when practising at home could you try and use the same language. Later in the year once everyone is feeling confident about telling the time on an analogue clock we will then use the alternative phrases of quarter to, quarter past and half past.

Telling the time on an analogue clock is an important skill please give your child many opportunities to read and notice the time.
******A Christmas gift idea...how about an analogue clock for beside the bed.

Recording your working out...

These past few weeks in maths we have been practising recording how we get answers to different questions. There are a variety of ways to answer questions and it is an important skill to be able to record how you work out your answers. You would have noticed in the homework there has been a number of questions that allowed space for showing how your child got their answer. Different ways students may get their answers is through drawing pictures, counting on fingers, counting in your head (the strategy for counting in your head should also be written down). Please encourage your child to explain and show their working out with you.

In Maths we have been learning more about sorting. For example how we can sort groups of numbers, shapes and people. We have also reviewed reading graphs and measurement.

At home you can encourage your child to discuss different types of measurement during daily activities such as walking to the shops, cooking, shopping, playing. By noticing how far something is, reading a recipe, how much something costs, and noticing how long it takes to do something are all great ways of experiencing first hand different types of measurement.
