Ordering, reading, writing and comparing numbers to 100!

What a great first week we have all had in our new Maths class! We have been busy getting to know each other very well through lots of fun and interactive games!

To begin with, we practised our counting to 100 through circle games. We then talked about the word 'estimate' and made some sensible estimates when Miss Wright showed us a group of objects very quickly! We did some accurate counting using different strategies then had a go at ordering different sets of numbers from smallest to largest. We then made a giant number line in the classroom and placed the numbers accurately.

On Wednesday we had a special visitor! Charlie the Crocodile came to teach us about recognising if numbers are greater than or smaller than each other using the symbols < and >. Charlie likes to eat the BIGGER number because he is rather greedy! We also learnt that when two numbers are the same, they are equal to each other so we use the symbol =.

What a fantastic first week!!

Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s using money

We started this week counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  The children have been looking at multiplication as adding groups of numbers within the context of money.

2p+2p+2p = 3x2p

We ended the week by looking at word problems and working out which calculation we needed to do.  We underlined the important numbers and words we needed for our number sentence and chose the correct symbol by looking at the mathematical language used.

Try doing some more money games on:

Shape

This week we have been learning about 2D shapes and 3D solids. The children have been naming and describing shapes using some important mathematical language:
·      Sides
·      Corners
·      Edges
·      Faces
They also had great fun finding shapes all around us when we went on a shape hunt around school.

Doubling and halving numbers

This week the children were understanding what it means to ‘double’ a number.  Then learning doubles of numbers up to 20 through songs, games and activities, including finger painting!

For example, the children were learning that 6+6 is the same as double 6 and that the answer to both was 12. They then worked out the inverse to show what happens when you half the number, e.g. 12-6=6.

Here are some fun websites for you to continue exploring at home:

Place Value

This week we have been learning all about how to partition a 2 digit number into tens and units using dienes apparatus. We split the numbers and added the tens then added the units, showing our working out like this:
46 = 4 tens and 6 units which is 40 + 6.

We also had a go at using arrow cards so we could see how Mr 0 gets squashed every time a bigger units number comes along! We have played lots of fun games such as place value bingo and 'guess my number' where each child has a different number card and says for example, 'I have 4 tens and 3 units...what am I?'
Here are some great interactive websites we have been using in class to help us with our understanding:
www.ictgames.com/sharkNumbers_v2.html
www.ictgames.com/arrowcards.html

We have also been ordering numbers on a number line from 0 - 100. We learnt the importance of looking at the tens number to help us order the numbers from smallest to largest. If there are two numbers which have the same tens number, then we must look at the units number! We used the symbols < and > to show which number is bigger and which number is smaller. Here is another great game you can play at home:

Khan Academy is a not for profit organisation that aims at providing online tutoring in a variety of subject areas including numeracy.

Please sign up to this website: https://www.khanacademy.org/ it is free. It is not a gaming website and your child will need some help to navigate it at first. It offers practise pages to practise different types of questions and provides video tutorials in case you need help working out strategies.

I believe this website will be useful during the summer vacation and all the way through different grades.

Over the past few weeks we have been doing things such as adding  and subtracting using tens and units blocks and equations.

At home you can ask your child to show you how they add this number using the tens and units equation.

34 +
23

We have also been using blocks to practise division questions such as "I have 4 friends, and I want to share 20 candies among each of them, how many candies do they get altogether?".

We have also learnt a few new games. One you can play together at home is 21. You start with 21 and you take turns to take away 1, 2 or 3 (no more). The first to 0 wins the game.

This week we measured ourselves and compared our heights to the worlds tallest man and the world shortest man.
At home you can find the difference of you height to the worlds tallest man if you like. He is from Turkey and measures at 251cm. Or the worlds shortest man measures at 55cm, he is from the Philippines.

This week in maths we have continued exploring different ways to count up by 2s 5s and 10s. We have used multiplication on a number line and used crossed squares to represent multiplication equations as in the photo on the left.

You can help your child at home by asking them to show you how to do multiplication equations on number lines like in the picture below.
