Thank you to all the children who dressed in red and brought in school supplies for the heart to heart charity. We had a presentation by the lady who works for them and she explained that the children are born with heart disease. Their families can't afford to pay for surgery so the charity helps them. We investigated the effect of different surfaces on the distance a car will travel. We made predictions, thought about fair testing, recorded our results in a table and made conclusion. We found that the sand paper surface let the car travel the furthest which was a bit of a surprise as it is bumpy. Why do you think this happened? We have been reading stories by Julia Donaldson and looked for common features in each book. Can you remember some of them? We looked at characters and setting which she describes in rhyme and using lots of repetition. What is your favorite character and why? We had a go at hot seating some of the characters from the Gruffalo. Who would you like to hot seat and what would you ask them? We also acted out The Gruffalo and filmed them so we could evaluate our performances- what did you think of yours? I am just making them louder then I will put them on here. We had a great afternoon investigating forces using the Toddler toys. We found out about push, pull, friction and gravity forces. We also worked out how to control and change the speed and direction of the vehicles. Can you explain what is happening in each photo? We have made a wonderful display of our paper cuttings. We cut snakes and the year of our birth, so dog or rooster. The ones from our homework are there too. We do not use templates as we learned the skills then designed our own cutting. We enjoyed reading the traditional story of the Great Race and extended our vocabulary to describe the animal characteristics. We wrote alternative reasons for the order of the animals. We watched clips of various Chinese operas including 'The White snake' and have been reading the story and again described the characters. We also watched some of the 'Monkey King' and made group character description posters. We are focusing on features of traditional stories such as openings and endings, description of setting and characters and having a well explained twist/ trick. We wrote our own version of the Monkey King and marked our work against this criteria using a marking ladder. We researched pandas and experimented with some traditional brush skills so we could paint our own picture. They are on display in the classroom- come and have a look. We found out about Yangshou and adapted our painting skills to try our version of these traditional paintings. These are being sent home as scrolls- explain your methods to your parents. Click on this picture to have a look at one of the websites we used. We read the story about a little girl who was trapped in a garden but fell in love. Can you remember the rest? We found out about the traditional craft of White and Blue Porcelain and had a go at designing our own plate to show the story. |
