MATHS - Week beginning 8th September 2014
We have continued our work on number, counting and ordering. We have spent time thinking about the different ways to work out addition and subtraction problems. We have been using a number line, cubes, counters, our fingers and pictures.
We are growing in confidence to count on, and are generally accurate counting up. Practising counting from 20 backwards to 0 is something we will continue to work on and would be beneficial to try at home!
We have done a lot of practical work with resources and have played several games on the whiteboard to consolidate the practical skills we are learning.

MATHS - Week beginning 1st September 2014
This week in maths we have been thinking about numbers. We have played a lot of counting games and have been getting used to the different rules and expectations in Maths lessons.
We have been practicing our counting skills by trying to remember to move objects or by crossing off objects as we count. We have been thinking about the different things we can use to help us reach the answer.
We have also been trying to find missing numbers in a number line, a tool we will be using regularly.
When writing numbers we have been trying to remember which way they need to go and also to use visual prompts if we can't remember. On Friday, we started to practice our 'counting on' skills, these are something we will continue to work on next week.

NUMERACY IN MS ROBINSON'S CLASS 2013-14
Numeracy - Week beginning 28th April
This week we have begn to use the term 'multiplication'. The children have been very excited to move into this area of maths. We have been practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s regularly for the last few weeks and so the children were confident to see this knowledge being applied in a different way.
We have specifically looked at using the term 'groups of', as an initial introduction. We have talked about having 2 groups of 3, drawing two circles and putting three dots inside, them counting up the dots to find the answer. We have then used this to write the number sentence 2x3=6.
We will be doing a lot more practise of this, but I am sure the children will also be showing you at home!

Numeracy - Week beginning 14th April
This week we have begun to look at different methods of 'chunking', basically splitting numbers into tens and units in order to make addition and subtraction of larger numbers easily.
We have looked at starting at the first number in an addition problem and then adding the tens and then adding the units.
We have also looked at adding the units together, and then adding the tens together, and then adding the final answers together.

Numeracy - Week beginning 7th April
We have spent a lot of this week looking at number and discovering what happens when we add or subtract multiples of ten. We have found out that when we use a number square all we need to do is to find our starting number and jump to the number below if we are adding ten, or jump to the number above if we are subtracting ten. We then applied this knowledge to discover that if we were adding twenty then we would jump two numbers below our starting number, or two numbers above our starting number if we were subtracting twenty.
We used this with sums involving number and also coins!
The children really began to understand and apply this knowledge by the close of the week and I was very proud of them! Well done to all!

Numeracy - Week beginning 17th March
Our focus this week has been looking at more than and less than, and we have also been consolidating our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have been looking at the different patterns formed when we count this way. We have also been looking at how we can read word problems and write them into number problems, some of these were quite tricky as they involved 2 steps!
We have also had a chance to play some games to help reinforce our learning.

Numeracy - Week beginning 17th February
Our focus during this week has been measuring. We have been learning to hold our rulers the correct way, so we can read the numbers from left to right and remembering to start at 0! I have been impressed by the accuracy the majority of the children are demonstrating and they are becoming confident in doing different forms of measuring. We have also played games in which we are having to read scales accurately in order for the postman to deliver his parcels.
Numeracy - Week beginning 10th February
We have had a great week handling data! We have spend our Numeracy lessons thinking about information and how it can be presented in different ways. We have looked at creating tally charts and bar graphs and have been using our understanding of these to answer questions, using terms such as "Which is the most popular?" The children have all worked really hard and are beginning to develop a firm understanding of these forms of data. Below are a couple of links to some of the games the children have been playing in order to improve their skills.

Numeracy - Week beginning 20th January
What a busy week! The children have been really busy thinking about numbers and different problems. We have had to spend time working out how many puppies Mr Jones had in his basket. Mr Jones had puppies which had 3 spots or 4 spots and had counted a total of 23 spots altogether - but how many puppies did that make? Below is the link to the game, see if your child can remember how to solve this tricky problem!

With other problems we have also been talking about the importance of working 'methodically' and 'showing our working out'. Below are some pictures of us solviing money problems by writing out the problem. We found out that the children are very good at showing 'what' they are doing! Well done everyone!

Numeracy - Week beginning 6th January
We have had a great beginning to this term. The children have been practicing their counting, and working out more than and less than problems. We have been doing some missing number work and trying to find out different ways to find the missing numbers. We completed some tricky work today about people getting on and off buses, which proved to be a huge challenge to all of the children.

Numeracy - Week beginning 14th October
We have had a great week continuing block C. We have had to think about how we could make a bed for the Queen (she wanted it to be 2 shoes in width by 3 shoes in length). We borrowed Mr. Bowker's shoes to do this and also tried with our own, but discovered they gave us diffferent results. Shoes were not a good way we decided!
We then measured the hall, the each child had a metre ruler and then in teams they were asked to find out the width. We first tried without any instructions some groups found that 4 rulers were not enough to go across the hall. Then after we worked together and watched others we all understood what to do and had another go. Below are some pictures! One group really got the hang of it and gave us a demonstration of 'speed measuring', their results were actually quite accurate!

Block C
This has been a great week in Numeracy. We have had a lot of fun doing practical activities based on measure!
This has been a great week in Numeracy. We have had a lot of fun doing practical activities based on measure!
We have tried to weigh books and put them in order from heaviest to lightest!
We have used scales and cubes to measure different things in the classroom.
We used rice to measure capacity. We got really good at making sure each cup of rice was as full as the next!
We also went with Ms. Yang to use water and measure containers. We all stayed amazingly dry!
We recorded all of the information we learned into our books. See below for more of our photos!!
Numeracy - Week beginning 23rd September
Block B
This week we have been reviewing our money work and consolidating our skills. We looked at the coins we need to pay for items and also at how much change we would get. This was a lot harder to do, but some children were really beginning to understand and could work out the sums confidently. We have practised using dots as a method to help us to do addition and subtractions, and this has helped us to become more accurate.
We have also looked at patterns and how we can make repeating patterns. We used our bodies to make patterns and then used different coloured cubes. Have a look at the photos below. We are getting really good!!

We have also looked at shapes and played some guessing games. We have been given information about the number of sides and corners a shape has, and then had to guess what it could be. We have also played a feeling game where we have put our hand into a bag and felt the shape inside and then had to use our mathematical vocabulary to describe the shape to our friends. We have been getting very good at these games and using proper mathematical language!
Numeracy Homework - Week beginning 23rd September
This week's homework is based on the lessons covered last week. One page is a general maths page and on the reverse are some money problems. Your child should be able to complete these confidently and independently.
Numeracy - Week beginning 16th September
This week we have been looking at money. We have talked briefly about different currencies around the world and have spent time looking at different coins from the UK. We have identified 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p and 50p coins.
We have arranged the coins by value and then had a chance to do some 'shopping', choosing 2 items to buy and then working out how much money they cost altogether. Have a look at some of the work we did below.

Maths This Week!
The children have been working very hard in Numeracy this week. We have spent a lot of time using different methods to demonstrate what addition and subtraction mean. We have been working out how to take oral questions and to translate them into mathematical calculations and then to apply our knowledge to reach an answer. We were then able to use number lines, cubes and our whiteboard to show the calculations we were doing. We also spent time thinking about 'one more' and 'one less' of a given number. Have a look at some of the hard work we have been doing...
Homework!
The children received their first piece of numeracy homework today. It should have come home in a clear plastic wallet. The work this week is some basic number ordering work and some basic calculations. The children have looked at the work together with me and we have talked through the tasks the children need to complete.
Homework needs to be returned by Friday to Ms Robinson's classroom, the children can bring it with them to their numeracy lesson. House Points will be awarded for correct homework.

Welcome to Ms. Robinson's Numeracy Page!!
We have had a busy first week in our Maths group. This week we have been thinking carefully about numbers. We have been practicing our adding skills and playing some number games. Taking turns, we have counted up to big numbers and then have had to count back down again. We have also worked on the interactive whiteboard trying to work out numbers that are bigger than one number but smaller than another.
