The children have continued their research on Amelia Earhart, and we have been practicing our geography skills, plotting locations on a map to show the first two important flights made by Amelia in 1932 and 1935. The children have looked at grid references and used these to find Newfoundland, Northern Ireland, Hawaii and California.
This week we have continued our study of some of the works of Hans Christian Andersen. We have been looking at the power of words and how we can match pictures to phrases. We have also been looking at different texts and choosing language which we find the most interesting and exciting. The children have had a chance to listen to more of the stories and have had conversations about the different languages these stories are told in. The end of the week culminated in us writing and drawing a story map, in which we finished the story of The Tin Soldier. Today we used our maps to help us to write the ending of the story, trying our best to remember all of the things we need to do when we are writing! I was thrilled with the work the children did this week! Adjectives - Challenge!! One of our challenges this week was to work in groups to find adjectives for every letter of the alphabet. We then shared our ideas and decided which were the best (some of these choices were tricky as the children all had great ideas). HOWEVER, we did not manage to finish the whole alphabet! You challenge is to see if you can think of adjectives that would fit in our missing spots!!!! T
amazing bouncy creepy deep enormous fluffy gooey huge icy jealous kissable lumpy moldy naughty odd polite quiet rough silky tall ugly vicious wobbly x yucky z Our adventurers and explorers topic is continuing this week by looking at the adventures of Amelia Earhart. In addition to the work we have been doing in our lessons the children have also had a few opportunities to complete some worksheets on Amelia, to give them a better idea about who she was. These worksheets will be coming home next weekend, for the children to finish if they would like to. I am not expecting these to be brought back to school, as the answers are in the back of the booklet which the children can use to check their own work.
This week we have begun our unit on Traditional Tales and have begun to look at some of the works of Han Christian Anderson. This week we have been focusing on the story of 'The Little Match Girl'. A lot of the children were familiar with this story already. We used this text to look at how images and pictures can convey emotions and how the text supported this. To finish the week, the children were asked to write an alternative ending to the story. I was pleased to see how well the children thought about this and the style of ending they wanted for the story and then tried to write in a similar style using lots of connectives and interesting vocabulary.
Our minibeasts are progressing, and hopefully will be finished soon, here are a few photos of their progress!
As part of our topic and in celebration of Chinese New Year, we have started to spend some time looking at the Chinese explorer, Zheng He. The children have added Zheng He onto our explorer timeline and have ordered his history.
We have read about some of the adventures he had, chasing away pirates and trading beautiful Chinese goods for spices and incense with his huge Chinese fleet. We will return to Zheng He after the Chinese New Years holidays during our upcoming trip! 'We have friends from many countries' is an apt P and O for all the children in our class. Throughout last term and this, I have seen the children develop their friendships and start to take more risks in establishing new friendships. This week the certificates have been awarded to Kieran and Isabella, for small acts of kindness and friendship. Well done! |
