This week we have started a new topic on Traditional Tales and this time we are concentrating on the work of Hans Christian Anderson. we have begun reading The Little Match Girl and have really concentrated on how adjectives are used to help create an image in the readers mind and how different characters have differing points of view. We used drama to help us with this, by pretending to be two characters in the book at a key moment. We then took photographs of the 'Freeze Frames' we created and talked about the images we had created. We also thought carefully about the motives behind these characters' actions and debated whether the characters were good or bad. What a great job Tigers - I'm so impressed with your deep thinking and the way you have engaged with this text!

This week in Literacy we have written our own leaflets all about Chinese New Year, using the notes we gathered last week. While doing this we learnt about titles, headings, bullet points and brackets and began to use these in our writing. We also focused on editing our own work - checking it for mistakes before writing it up in neat. Great job Tigers!
This week we finished our work on Captain Cook and began looking at Zheng He. We read a book about his travels and drew a 'junk boat', the type of boat used in the fleet he led. Then we used ink and brushes to paint our boats - they are on display in our classroom, come and have a look - they are fabulous! In preparation for our unit on Non-Chronological reports, during which we will be creating leaflets to tell others about Chinese New Year, Tiger Class set out on a fact finding mission throughout Year 2 to find out all about it! We learned about banners, money envelopes, the animal years, the story of Nian and the food eaten at Chinese New Year. Tigers have started a new topic this term called Adventurers and Explorers. Last week we were lucky enough to have six famous explorers visit us in school and tell the children about their adventures around the world. In the classroom we have been learning about the life of Captain Cook and the creatures of the country he discovered - Australia. This has led us to using classification keys to sort minibeasts, using papier mache to create our own 3D minibeasts, looking at historical sources and using a 'Diamond 9' to sort out important and unimportant information. In Literacy we have been focusing on poetry, thinking carefully about the language poets use and the effects they create. We have linked this in with our work on Captain Cook and Australia by working towards writing poems about minibeasts. To start off with we collected information on Minibeasts by watching video clips and looking through books and then expanded our vocabulary by thinking about all the interesting adjectives and adverbs we could use to describe them. The Tigers then used what they had learned to create exciting poems of their own, which will be on display in our classroom soon! Miss Ding and I were so impressed with how sensible Tiger Class had become over the holiday. Over the last two weeks you have been working hard, looking after each other, being kind and listening beautifully. Keep up the good work, we are very impressed!
Wow, what a lot of fun we have had this week! We learnt all about South Africa in our class and visited the other classes in Year 2 to learn all about their countries too. We also had some mums and dads come into class to talk to us about countries they have a special connection with - we have really learnt a lot about countries all over the world! Then we took part in our fabulous UN Day Parade - all dressed in different costumes from our countries and then we visited different countries all over the school to get our passports stamped. Phew - what a week! We all had loads of fun and learnt so much along the way! A big thank you to everyone who came in and supported us - Tiger Class and Miss Humphreys feel very lucky :) On Monday we visited Wales... On Tuesday we visited the United Arab Emirates and Spain... On Wednesday we visited Egypt and Bali... And on Thursday we had our UN Day parade... Tiger Class had loads of fun taking part in our Sports Day on Monday and showing off their skills. This week Tiger Class have begun learning about Traditional Stories. We have started by examining the common features across lots of different stories and then focused in on settings and characters. We created setting doors after being inspired by this website and challenged our friends to work out which traditional story our setting was from - can you guess any? |
