In Literacy we have read and discussed a range of poems. Some rhyme, some have a rhythm, some are jokes, some are tongue twisters. We learned how to work out riddles and had a go at writing our own. Below are some we wrote together:
Here are some riddle websites- see if you can work out the answers!http://www.buzzle.com/articles/children-riddles.html
http://www.funenglishgames.com/funstuff/funnyriddles.html The stars in the night sky inspired Van Gogh's beautiful painting. Click on the picture to have another look at his museum website and to listen to the song. Click here to try the magic swirling trick we looked at. We looked carefully at the features of the painting and experimented with techniques to get these swirling effects. Painting was rather tricky so we are going to try oil pastels next. Our work will be displayed in class. We have finished editing and writing our one versions of George's Marvelous Medicine and we are very proud of ourselves. Most people had very original ideas which were well explained. We made shadow puppets of the characters and worked in groups to act a story. One person had to read the story and the others acted with the puppets. These have been filmed and we hope to have them up here soon. Here are some photos for now. After tracking the key events and the development of the characters we felt we had a good understanding of how Roald Dahl writes a story. We are planning and writing our own version- see the files below for the planning template and our shared writing of an opening using one of our plans.
We have had a very busy week starting our topic on space with the fab Open Morning ( photos on the home page). You took/ found awesome photos of shadows for homework ( featured below) and explained well how you had made them. We found out where Earth is in the Solar system and why we can live here. We research about the sun and found out that it is not just a source of light.
In Literacy we have been reading George's Marvellous medicine, tracking the development of the characters and predicting consequences of events. Check out the tracker posters we have in the classroom. We read and performed dialogue between George and Grandma- some of us were very expressive and some of us made up alternative responses. This week we learned about Shackleton and researched Polar animals. Today we watched a great film about his adventure. We finished our books on Australia which we have sent home for you to share and used marking ladders to make sure we covered all the criteria. Hope you like them, they were a lot of effort. As we worked so hard we had a little trip up to the IB art exhibition in the big school as a treat. It was amazing to see all the different types of art and we picked up a few tips and ideas for our own work. Miss Yu helped us play a short game of human chess before we came back to DUCKS. Ella read her Passover books and we talked about Easter. We are very sad to say bye to Miss Yu but know we will see her around as she is now teaching Mandarin- all the flowers and cards you sent in for her were lovely. Have a great holiday and see you in a week :) This week we have used our knowledge of Information texts and researching skills to make our own book on Australian Animals complete with contents pages and glossaries. We found the Index pages tricky so will do a bit more on those. We learned about the aboriginal dreamtime stories and had a go at using their traditional symbols and methods to paint. These are up in the classroom. We also read about Captain Cook's expeditions and found out what it was like on his ship- would you like to have been there? We had a wonderful week reading so many inspiring books and listening to guest readers such as teachers and students from the big school. We enjoyed reading our favorite books to Reception and performing extracts to our class mates.Every child had thought very hard about their costume for the parade. Everyone has been very impressed by the quality of research and the excellent group work used to produce the fantastic Christopher Columbus posters. These are hanging in the classroom for you to see. Well done to the children who brought in money from the Readathon- if you have any to hand in, please bring it on Monday. The collection will go to help the heart to heart children. Parents are invited to come and look at their child's books together on Tuesday 12th March in the classroom at 9-9.30am. Any questions you have about the books can be discussed at Parent's Evening.
